Amsterdam Mini Cruise with P&O Ferries

Posted on: Wednesday, 16 October 2013

Ever since I returned from my little trip around the world, I have made it no secret that I am just dying to grab my passport and head off to somewhere new. So can you imagine my happiness when my friend told me she had a few days off work coming up?

As if by fate, that week I received an email announcing that P&O Ferries had a special 2-4-1 offer on their mini cruises to Amsterdam. For just £95, we had a ferry for two people, plus an extra night in Amsterdam booked. Bargain alert!

After a two hour long train journey from Manchester to Hull, we headed off to the port, boarded the ferry, pulled down our cabin beds from the wall and settled down at the bar, where we enjoyed one too many overpriced mojitos and a (rather comical) band.

We arrived in Rotterdam the next day, jumped on a coach and set foot in the beautiful city of Amsterdam at around 11am.

We spent our first day walking around before hopping on a canal cruise to take us around the city. It did take us a while to get to grips with all the bicycles zooming at us from every angle and all the streets looking exactly the same, but it was nice to just walk around without any plans.

Later on, we went to The Amsterdam Dungeons which was hilarious and had us terrified. We then found our way to the lovely Amadi Park Hotel which had very modern and spacious rooms and even a complimentary mini bar, awesome.

That night we went to the Xtreme Ice Bar... if we would have paid full price to go in, instead of getting a deal with the dungeon tickets then I'd have been annoyed. But hey, at least we got to spend a couple of hours afterwards in an Irish bar around the corner, drinking Heineken and Baileys Coffee.

The next day we headed for Anne Frank's House, which was incredibly inspiring and quite emotional. Afterwards, we had enough time to spend a few hours in the Stedelijk Museum before heading back to the coach and getting our ferry back home.

If you're thinking about getting away for a few days this autumn/winter, then I'd definitely recommend Amsterdam for a city break. Just make sure you take a good coat and a comfy pair of shoes! Oh, and it helps if you don't get sea sick...
