How to deal with and disguise a hangover

Posted on: Wednesday, 1 January 2014

Nothing quite says happy new year like a thumping head, loss of memory and a moment of confusion when you wake up. If you're still drunk, then you've probably not yet noticed all those spots that have appeared from nowhere, or those panda eyes that are making you wonder if you got punched last night.

If you're like me and also currently wallowing in self-pity, then take note of my hangover-busting routine. First of all, grab a pint of water and a painkiller and whilst you're up, check your bag for the holy trinity - phone, card and keys - check. Now let's move on...

Step one: remove any evidence of last night
Any traces of makeup/drunk texts/strangers in the house - remove. I personally recommend bioderma, deleting before you read them back, and telling everyone your big brother, who's a bodybuilder, will be home from the gym soon.

Step two: prepare for step three
Take a quick warm shower (never hot, or you might faint), throw on a fresh onesie and de-puff your eyes with a cold teaspoon. Now you're feeling awake, you can get ready for the day ahead because after all, those Christmas sales are not going to buy themselves now, are they?

Step three: remember that no-makeup makeup look from Spring?
My super quick, tried and tested (more times than I'd like to count) routine is the perfect coverage for a face that is screaming you never want to see another jagerbomb again.

First of all, I spritz my face with Caudile Beauty Elixir then apply a pea sized amount of Illamasqua Hydra Veil to hydrate and prep the skin.

To neutralise the dark under-eye circles, brighten and lift my eyes, I apply Illamasqua Skin Lift. To cover any spots, I mix the two shades from Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage in SC-1 on the back of my hand and then pat it on to the blemishes with my finger.

Nothing is a bigger giveaway than lots of caked on makeup so after covering and concealing, I use Dr Jart+ Water Fuse BB Cream instead of foundation. Not only does this even out my skin tone and provide great coverage, but its water fused formula hydrates my dull skin and gives a fresh faced look (side note, my MUA friend once complimented me when using this by saying 'wow, it just looks like skin).

As my skin is really dry anyway, hangover skin is the worst so I tend to avoid any powder (blush, bronzer, translucent) as to not draw attention to fine lines and flaky patches. Instead I opt for The Body Shop Lip & Cheek Tint, dab it onto the apples of my cheeks and swipe across my lips. An extra splash of colour should be added to the lips if you really need to distract away from tired eyes and blemished skin.

To complete that faux fresh-faced I-definitely-did-not-drink-last-night look, we need to get back to brightening and opening the eyes. A quick swipe of a neutral or soft pink eyeshadow will be most flattering (avoid plum, purple, or gray shadows) and add a couple of coats of Benefit's They're Real mascara, to lengthen, lift, and volumize lashes. For maximum awakening, I apply a white eye pencil to my waterline and voilĂ !

Step four: carbs and air
January the 1st is the perfect day to fail on your new year's resolution. After all you're going to do it sooner or later, and you're in desperate need right now. HIT THE CARBS. Then when your food coma takes over the pain from the hangover, get some fresh air and go shopping.

I hope you found my quick guide useful and I'm sure a lot of you can relate to how bad I'm feeling right now! Happy new year... x
