How to touch up your makeup in the office

I love working in an office and there's plenty I can get away with at my desk (e.g. reading the daily mail). Now while there are a fair few things you can get away with at the desk, when it comes to touching up your makeup, it's probably best if you don't share those weird faces you pull - specifically the mascara face - that should probably be saved for the privacy of the Ladies'.

Besides, what's the point in doing your makeup for work if your colleagues are going to see you topping it up at your desk? You don't see magicians revealing their tricks, do you?

Here's my list of do's and don'ts:
  • Do use a compact mirror to give yourself a once over, or to check on any post-lunch leftovers that may be lingering in your teeth - though try and be sneaky about it and use a smartphone or computer reflection
  • Do apply lip balm - whether it's from a tube or tin - it only takes seconds to apply and doesn't require a mirror.
  • Do pull your hair back into a ponytail or bun - I tend to do this when I'm getting stuck into a project because I'll play with my hair if it's down and I'm trying to concentrate!
  • Don't make it obvious you're going to the Ladies to do your makeup - go in your lunch break if you can and don't spend longer than you need to, it also helps if you take a discrete makeup bag.
  • Don't brush your hair in public - it's quite rude to have strands of hair flying all over the place.
  • Don't do anything that takes more than a few seconds, requires a mirror, or can cause a mess.

If you've got any additional do's and don'ts for doing preening yourself in the office, leave a comment!
